Marriage & Covenant – A call to a generation to return to the old ways

Posted on September 8, 2019September 8, 2019 by Carl Van Vliet

This last week I had the great privilege and honor of seeing one of my sons get married. They honored

me by asking me to speak on covenant in their ceremony. I couldn’t have been more proud of these two amazing young people who love Jesus fully and love each other so deeply for such a young age. You two have an amazing future in store, together walking out God’s purposes.

Marriage and Covenant. We live in a world today that has fought hard to accomplish two things in the realm of marriage:

Cultural redefinition and social evolution in what marriage means.

  • Cultural redefinition has worked to change the structure of a marriage: Covenant to contract, No fault divorce, cohabitation and its legal precedent: common law marriage, where by ones cohabitation marriage is assumed.
  • And Social Evolution changes to participant structure: Biblicaly one man and one woman to a social blending of any particular gender roles, either physical or psychological,

In the process of this cultural and social attempt to restructure and redesign marriage terms like Antiquated and Archaic have been used to describe what we celebrate in marriage. Covenant is one such concept that is deemed Antiquated: “outmoded or discredited by reason of age : old and no longer useful, popular, or accepted”

During this wedding ceremony I felt Holy Spirit say Jeremiah 6:16 “Thus says the Lord: “Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls”.
I feel like this was a prophetic moment for my son and his new bride. I also felt this is a prophetic moment for a generation of young people entering into this thing called marriage. The world is attempting to redefine and evolve marriage into something different. But there is an old path, and old way. God defined it in His word as covenant. Walk in it. Even at this wedding there were beacons of couples who have lived and modeled this covenant dichotomy. In our churches today there are literally hundreds of thousands of couples who have lived this covenant out for 20, 30 40, even 50+ years, who God is calling forth to live Titus 2 out to a generation of young people who are seeking to do it right before God for the sake of His purposes for their marriage.

So today I am asking, where are you covenant keeping couples who will step up to become spiritual mothers and fathers to a generation hungry for the old ways? There is a need of the faithful to be faithful once again. This is a moment, a Titus 2, Psalm 145 & Psalm 78 moment. Gods not finished with you. you have more in your lives to release. You have purpose and destiny, will you walk it out? For the sake of my son, my children and scores of others will you step up once again and release covenant keeping honor to a generation?
