But God… Xavier’s Story #missourimiracle

Posted on September 15, 2018April 11, 2022 by Carl Van Vliet
On Saturday September 8th, one week ago, almost to the moment, a desperate message went out to our church leadership and prayer team. One of our families world just went full on tailspin in one of those moments no one ever dreams will happen to their family. Xavier, 10 and part of our children’s ministry @ the church I serve at had fallen out of a tree house. That wasn’t the worst part, there was what was originally thought was a tent stake sticking up out of the ground. Turned out to be a Rotisserie Grill skewer. Xavier had fallen face first onto this skewer and had impaled through his face, he was then being rushed to our Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.
Our prayer team immediately began to pray, and to contact all of the prayer warriors we knew in our various networks. Several of our Pastors mobilized and headed for the hospital.
When I walked into that trauma suite in the Emergency Room at Children’s Mercy Hospital and met with Gabrielle Miller, Xavier’s mom, standing over her son, I initially thought to myself, there is no way this boy lives. Having spent the vast majority of my life serving as a volunteer firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician, I have seen a lot of really bad stuff. Stuff people just don’t walk away from. But God. Fortunately I don’t live in the realm of every thought that crosses my mind because I serve an amazing God and while I have seen many horrible things on scenes of accidents and emergencies, I have also seen and experienced the reality of the phrase But God.  I have lived through situations where there was no hope But God.
We prayed. What else is there to do in moments like this. The reality of that moment is God had already shown Himself strong in Xavier’s life by the fact that He was alive. He was alive and able to speak cognitively, wiggle and move his extremities, It was already proving to be a But God moment.  And that was only the beginning. The next 24 hours were a roller-coaster ride of faith, doubt, fear and emotion. Desperation. But God.
In Romans chapter 4 We read about Abraham’s “But God” Faith: “who, contrary to hope, in hope believed,” (verse 18) If I could paraphrase this verse I would say it like this: Contrary to hope, But God, Abraham believed. There are moments and even seasons gone through where there is no “natural” hope. There is no hope in strength, talent. ability. or anything man can do on his own. Those are the But God moments and seasons, only God can do anything at all here, and we need a miracle. Our faith was in the hope of our God for in the natural there was no hope. We all began to pray in that fashion. We prayed for supernatural intervention, supernatural wisdom and sight for the doctors as they prepared to perform a very delicate surgery. (Watch the primary surgeon discuss this here) We prayed But God, believing God for a miracle. God showed up.
God loves to show up in moments like this. Moments when you cant do anything on your own. Moments when there is simply no way it can be chalked up to anything else. Watch that video again. Watch how the skewer came out. But God.
Ephesians 2 puts it like this:  “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ” (Verses 4-5). But God.
Today as I write this blog Xavier is recovering at home and is expected to make a full and complete recovery. Last weekend the Miller family experienced a truly But God moment in their family, Xavier experienced a But God moment in his young life. He is alive today against all odds, contrary to any natural hope. He is a walking testimony of the But God miraculous power to save, deliver and heal.
If you do a google search today with the words “Harrisonville Xavier” The number of pages of articles will blow your mind.
This story has truly spanned the globe. Our miracle working God is being covered all across the world, but for Xavier and the rest of the Miller family the testimony is only just beginning as they realize and walk out God’s love for them and His hand upon their lives.  I have shared some of those articles at the end of this blog. I am truly grateful to have had the privilege to walk this journey with this family.
Maybe you have a need in your life today. Maybe you are struggling to hope because in the natural you have exhausted all that man can accomplish in his own power. Maybe today as you read this you need a But God moment in your life. Let me encourage your today to seek out the God of Miracles, He is alive and wants to meet with you today. If you are in the Harrisonville Missouri area I want to personally invite you to come on Sunday September 23rd to The church at Pleasant Ridge and hear the powerful testimony of the Miller family and receive prayer for your But God situation. Find out more about that here.
